The Emerging Difference
We're not cookie-cutter. We're educators.
Executive function coaching has become a buzzword — at Emerging, it's a craft. Every coach on our team is a trained educator, certified in the Anti-Boring Approach™ and grounded in the neuroscience of how the adolescent and young adult brain learns, grows, and adapts.
We don't just treat symptoms like missed deadlines or messy backpacks. We get to the root. Why is this student avoiding the work? What breaks down before they open the planner? What do they actually need to build a system that works for them?
That's the difference. We don't hand students a template — we help them understand themselves and build skills that last through high school, college, and beyond.
"I want to tell you how appreciative we are of what you've done with D over the last couple of months. Her grades are fantastic and consistent, she has a routine which helps her mild ADHD, and she genuinely looks forward to your sessions. I was a little hesitant in the beginning, given the cost, but I now realize it's worth every penny."
"When they started working together in January, P couldn't focus for more than five minutes. A few months in, the progress is remarkable — he now completes assignments independently and is ready to take on real strategies for organization and studying."
"It's been incredible to see N take real ownership, solve problems independently, and stay ahead of important deadlines — a huge shift that reflects the meaningful progress he's making."

The 8 Core Executive Function Skills
When one skill lags, your whole student feels it. Not just their grades. Their confidence. Their relationships. Their sense of what they're capable of. To hear expert clinicians break down the neuroscience, listen to Episode 29: Executive Function 101.
Read through each one and honestly reflect on your student. Does this sound familiar?
Organization
Managing materials, information, and deadlines effectively. Includes both physical organization and mental categorization of ideas.
Task Initiation
Beginning work without procrastination or avoidance. Often the biggest hurdle for students who struggle with executive functioning.
Planning & Prioritizing
Sequencing tasks logically and knowing where to start. Helps students break down large projects and manage competing deadlines.
Self-Monitoring
Recognizing mistakes, evaluating effort, and identifying when adjustments are needed. The foundation of independent learning and growth.
Working Memory
Holding information in mind long enough to use it effectively. Crucial for following multi-step directions and connecting new learning to prior knowledge.
Flexibility
Adapting smoothly when things don't go as planned. Helps students pivot strategies, accept feedback, and handle unexpected changes.
Emotional Control
Staying steady and regulated during frustration, disappointment, or stress. Critical for resilience and maintaining focus during challenging tasks.
Impulse Control
The ability to pause long enough to make a thoughtful choice rather than acting on immediate urges. Essential for classroom behavior and decision-making.
What the Research Tells Us
Here's what we want parents to know: even two lagging executive function skills is enough to create real, measurable impact.
Research consistently shows that executive function deficits are directly linked to anxiety, depression, and lower academic performance — and the relationship is bidirectional. Struggles in just one or two EF areas can trigger stress and self-doubt, which in turn further impair executive function. It becomes a cycle.
Studies of college students have found that EF deficits in areas like task initiation, planning, organization, and working memory significantly predict academic procrastination, academic probation, and dropout.
In other words: this isn't about laziness, motivation, or character. When executive function skills lag, capable students struggle — academically and emotionally.
The good news? Executive function skills are teachable. With the right coaching, students can build sustainable systems, reduce overwhelm, and reconnect their intelligence to their outcomes.
If two or more of these sound familiar, let's talk.
